Sri Dalada Maligawa – The Sacred Sanctuary of Buddha's Tooth Relic

As dawn breaks over Kandy, the first rays of sunlight set the golden roofs of Sri Dalada Maligawa aflame with light. This sacred temple, nestled beside the tranquil waters of Kandy Lake, has served as the spiritual heart of Sri Lanka for over three centuries. Within its heavily guarded inner chamber rests Buddhism's most venerated treasure - the sacred left canine tooth of Lord Buddha, said to have been rescued from his funeral pyre in 543 BCE.

The tooth's dramatic journey to Sri Lanka reads like an ancient epic. Smuggled from India in the 4th century CE hidden within the hair ornament of Princess Hemamala, its possession became synonymous with the divine right to rule. Kings built capitals around it, invaders sought to destroy it, and today, millions of pilgrims journey to honor it. The present temple complex, constructed between 1687-1782 by Kandyan kings, represents the culmination of this sacred guardianship.

The Living Pulse of Devotion

Step through the ornate golden archway and the atmosphere transforms. The air hangs heavy with the fragrance of tuberoses and sandalwood incense, mingling with the faint beeswax scent of countless oil lamps. Your bare feet meet cool stone floors polished smooth by generations of devotees. From somewhere deep within the complex, the rhythmic beating of magul bera drums vibrates through your chest, their primal tempo marking the temple's sacred hours.

Three times daily, the temple comes alive with the puja (offering) ceremonies:

  • 5:30 AM: The dawn service as mist rises from Kandy Lake
  • 9:30 AM: The morning offering when sunlight floods the inner shrine
  • 6:30 PM: The twilight ceremony with flickering lamplight

During these rituals, the inner chamber's carved ivory doors swing open to reveal the golden casket containing the relic. Though the tooth itself remains hidden within seven nested golden reliquaries (the smallest just 5cm tall), pilgrims press forward with offerings of lotus blossoms and frangipani, their murmured prayers creating a constant hum of devotion.

Architectural Poetry in Gold and Stone

The temple complex unfolds as a physical manifestation of Buddhist cosmology. The outer courtyard's moonstone carving depicts the cycle of samsara, its concentric rings guiding visitors toward enlightenment. The main shrine's golden canopy shimmers against the Sri Lankan sky, while its walls tell sacred stories through intricate ivory carvings and vibrant murals.

Don't miss these architectural marvels:

  • The Octagonal Pattirippuwa: This 1803 addition served as the temple library, its delicate woodcarvings resembling frozen lace
  • New Shrine Room: Added in 1992, its walls display 108 painted panels narrating the relic's history
  • Raja Tusker Museum: Honoring the temple's most beloved elephant who carried the relic casket for 37 processions

The Esala Perahera: When the Temple Takes to the Streets

For ten magical nights each July/August, the sacred tooth relic's replica leads Kandy's legendary Esala Perahera procession. The temple courtyard becomes a staging ground where robed monks bless hundreds of performers:

  • Tuskers in golden caparisons swaying to drumbeats
  • Fire dancers spinning flaming hoops
  • Whip crackers whose snaps echo through the hills
  • Kandyan dancers in elaborate headdresses

The procession route becomes a river of light, with thousands of oil lamps reflecting off the temple's golden facade and the dark waters of Kandy Lake.
